Top Ten Tuesday -Familiar Words in Historical Fiction Titles

Today’s Topic: Frequently Used Words In [Insert Genre/Age Group] Titles

Hosted by: That Artsy Reader Girl

This actually was a more interesting topic choice than I initially anticipated. I wasn’t sure I would even be able to fulfill this week’s prompt. Since historical romance is my favorite genre, I decided to focus on titles from my Goodreads list. As I researched I found that though there are many unique titles, there are also many that are more frequently used than I realized.

Most of these are centered around the titles or roles of a woman or the goals and desires of a woman. I do not consider myself a feminist by any stretch of the imagination, but I started to become a little insulted by how often words like lady, bride or daughter popped up, as if that is all we are.  I did find it interesting that the terms girl and woman were more commonly used in my contemporary titles than my historical ones. I’m not sure if that is progress or not. Thanks to my mother’s training, I’ve been taught to think a lady is a better thing to be than a girl or even a woman. Ladies are gracious, kind, thoughtful, generous and compassionate, but also have a backbone of steel when necessary.

I don’t have any problems with the words love and heart, as I think love is a universal desire and many people are guided by their hearts. But of course, I also don’t agree with the idea that the heart is the ultimate moral guide or that (romantic) love should be our sole aim in life.

Ultimately, I realized that as these are words used in historical fiction titles. They accurately reflect the culture and mindset of the times. Though there are many things I appreciate and value from these eras, I’m also thankful for the freedom and opportunities that modern women now enjoy. Top Ten Tuesday -Favorite Movie Quotes

Today’s Topic: Favorite Book Quotes

Hosted by: That Artsy Reader Girl

I’m tweaking today’s topic a bit and sharing my favorite movie quotes instead. As much as I love to read, for some reason, I’ve never had a great memory for book quotes. Movies, on the other hand, are a different story. I can carry on almost a whole conversation with things I’ve heard in films. I liberally pepper my conversation with them, even though it often leaves others wondering what in the heck I’m talking about. Continue reading “Top Ten Tuesday -Favorite Movie Quotes”

Top Ten Tuesday -Books I Could Re-Read Forever

Today’s Topic: Books I Could Re-read Forever

Hosted by: The Artsy Reader Girl

Despite the fact that my TBR list is mammoth and will probably never be finished, I am a faithful re-reader. When I find a good story with good characters I will read it over and over. For me, it is like re-visiting old friends, or the comfort of returning home. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that I already know I will love the story. I hate investing time in a book only to discover that it doesn’t appeal to me.

Generally, I will purchase a new book on Kindle. Then, if I really love it, I will purchase the print version to keep forever on my bookshelf. I like being able to physically see all my “friends” and know they are right there at my fingertips when I need them.  Though my “friend” list is in the high hundreds, I will try to pare this list down considerably for today’s list.

In order to challenge myself a bit, I have tried to list books which have not been featured on my website before and which may not be well-known. Continue reading “Top Ten Tuesday -Books I Could Re-Read Forever”

I’m a romantic at heart and I love a good love story. So when I saw this week’s topic was a love freebie to celebrate Valentine’s Day, I was thrilled. I had a bit of trouble deciding what my topic would be as I had so many ideas. But I finally settled on my favorite book romances.

Is there anything better than when two individual souls find themselves in the other? I think not and the journey in recognizing love is half the fun. So, in honor of Valentine’s Day, I give you my favorite book romances. Continue reading “Top Ten Tuesday -Favorite Book Romances”

Top Ten Tuesday -My TBR Book Orphans

Today’s Topic: Books That Have Been On My TBR the Longest and I Still Haven’t Read

Hosted by: That Artsy Reader Girl

The fact that I have a whole book case just for my TBR pile, should tell you a bit about the state of my reading life. As much interest as I have in all the books I have purchased, I only have so much time. Sadly, that means that certain books remain on my bookshelf for a long time, like little orphans waiting to be noticed and claimed. I’m ashamed to admit that several of them have been waiting for years to regain my attention. Continue reading “Top Ten Tuesday -My TBR Book Orphans”

Top Ten Tuesday -Books I’ve Read but Forgotten

Today’s Topic: Books I Really Liked but Can’t Remember Anything/Much About

Hosted by: That Artsy Reader Girl

This week’s topic had me stumped. I’m a true lover of story in any form, so I have a good memory of those which I read. But as I started going through my read list on Goodreads, I was surprised to find there are a few books which I actually couldn’t remember. Of course, I remember reading them, but I’m ashamed to say there are some whose stories I have forgotten. I guess that is bound to happen when you have been an obsessive reader your whole life. Still, I must admit I’m a bit ashamed, particularly since these are books I actually liked. Continue reading “Top Ten Tuesday -Books I’ve Read but Forgotten”

Top Ten Tuesday -Bookish Resolutions & Goals

Today’s Topic: Bookish Resolutions/Goals

Hosted by: The Artsy Reader Girl -Top Ten Tuesday has a new host and I am excited that Jana will be carrying on this fun Tuesday tradition.

I’ve never been one to make New Year’s resolutions. But, if there was ever an area that I would make resolutions and keep them, it would have to do with reading.

I’ve never really given much thought to how and what I read before, but I like the idea of being a more intentional reader. Up until now, I pretty much just choose my next book based on my mood. Adding these resolutions will not impact the number of books I read in a year, but it will definitely impact the types of books I read. Top Ten Tuesday -Books I Meant to Read in 2017

Today’s Topic: Ten Books We Meant To Read In 2017 But Didn’t Get To (and totallyyyy plan to get to in 2018!!)

Hosted By: The Broke and the Bookish

What’s the saying about good intentions? I had the best. I really did. But you know, so many books…so little time. And since I read very much the way I dress, by what feels right that day, some of the books I desperately wanted to read, didn’t actually get read. (Hangs my head in shame.) Top Ten Tuesday -New Authors I Read in 2017

Today’s Topic: Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2017

Hosted by: The Broke and the Bookish

If you have been following my Top Ten Tuesday posts, then some of these authors and their books will be familiar to you. I love discovering new-to-me authors and many of them wrote some of my favorite reads this year.

The main reason I will try a new author is that their cover(s) grab my eye. But occasionally I will do so if the book has great hype or if I find it on sale.

Overall, 2017 was a good year for me in experiencing new authors. Clicking on the title links will take you to my reviews for some of these stories. Continue reading “Top Ten Tuesday -New Authors I Read in 2017”

Top Ten Tuesday -Books on My 2018 TBR List

Today’s Topic: Top Ten Books I’m Looking Forward to In 2018 (These could be new releases, or books you resolve to read, ten debuts we are looking forward to, etc.)

Hosted by: The Broke and the Bookish

Considering I haven’t even begun whittling down my Winter TBR list, I probably shouldn’t contemplate adding to it with new 2018 releases. But, how can I help it when there are such great stories on the horizon? If these new releases are any indication of how good 2018 is going to be, then I say, bring it on!

Since, I  can’t possible narrow this list down to ten, I’ve at least tried to organize it. There are some books that I just auto-buy because I’m a faithful fan of the author. Then there are those I can’t resist because they are part of a series I’m hooked on. Continue reading “Top Ten Tuesday -Books on My 2018 TBR List”
